School Zones Matter

By Alex Fedortchouk

GETTING IT RIGHT WITH ‘FIND MY SCHOOL’

Did you know that getting your school zone right can make a difference of hundreds of thousands in the buying price of a top school zone property, versus buying a neighbouring one which does not make it into “the zone.” Not only that, school zones are constantly updated, so you need to be sure you have got your facts right for the million-dollar question.

Until recently, you had to rely on Google to find out the public primary and secondary schools zoned for a property address, and that often meant using websites with a disclaimer. The Victorian state government’s Department of Education and Training has launched the Find My School website in early 2019. Findmyschool.vic.gov.au provides all parents and students with clear information about school zones in Victoria and is the official source for all Victorian public school zones. Visit https://www.findmyschool.vic.gov.au/ and type in your property address; the website will then locate your designated neighbourhood public primary and secondary schools.

Victoria is Australia’s fastest growing state, and Melbourne is one of the fastest-growing cities in the developed world. One of the main draws of the City of Monash and surrounds has been the quality of education offered in government schools, being home to some of the state’s top-rated secondary and primary public schools. Locals, as well as interstate and foreign migrants, often have the school zone as their number one criterion when buying or renting in Monash and neighbouring Glen Eira.

The boundaries of some Victorian primary and secondary school enrolment zones have changed in response to growth across the city, changes in school capacity, to manage enrolment pressure where demand exceeds capacity, and where new schools or new campuses have been built. According to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) at the Department’s website, it is intended that any zone changes will happen in Term 1 each year.

If you are keen to more, visit the Department’s website at the address given in the references to download the latest FAQ and call us at (03) 9568 2000 if you are looking at buying in a specific school zone.
